Second Trimester

Pregnancy Week By Week - Week 19

Hang in there; you’ve almost reached the halfway mark! Meanwhile you may feel like your esophagus is on fire. Heartburn is one of those fun pregnancy things. A few tips – try not to eat too close to bed time, as when you lie down the stomach acid will head upwards even easier than before. Also keep some antacids (like Gaviscon on hand). It can also help to drink some milk or eat yogurt. Avoid coffee and fizzy drinks.

Your baby is starting to “chub” up, and his skin is now coated with vernix, a waxy substance that protects from the amniotic fluid. The kidneys are starting to produce urine, which is creating part of the amniotic fluid. At 8 ½ ounces and 6 inches long your baby looks more and more like a baby!

Tip

Now is a good time to ‘clean house’ before the baby arrives, as you won’t be doing much cleaning towards the end of your pregnancy, or in the weeks that follow after. Get rid of anything you won’t need, and you’ll find that de-cluttering your home will help you feel focused and more prepared for ‘baby time’.

Pregnancy Week By Week - Week 20

Half-way there, woo! So perhaps a celebration is in order? Take your partner out to a fancy restaurant, a show, or slip away for a weekend bed and breakfast, whatever floats your boat.

Don’t forget to take care of yourself during this time, your body is expanding rapidly and it’s even more important than ever that you moisturize!

It’s probably just about time for your big ultrasound! Are you going to find out whether you are having a boy or girl? The surprise is fun, but at this point you may be tired of surprises, and wanting to know exactly what colour you can paint the nursery. Your baby is now 10 ½ ounces and 6 ½ inches long!

Tip

Buy a journal and start keeping track of your thoughts, feelings and wishes for your pregnancy and your baby. The good old ‘baby brain’ will kick in anytime now, and you may not remember what this feels like.

Pregnancy Week By Week - Week 21

So, you’re now over the hump and heading towards the finish line. You’ve got larger than life breasts, and your energy levels have never been higher. It’s no wonder then that you feel ‘frisky’ a lot of the time. That’s ok! Make good use of this time, because in a few weeks you may wonder if you’ll ever want to have sex again! As your belly grows you and your partner will have to get a bit creative in your positions, as the belly on belly action will simply not be feasible.

If you have your own stethoscope you can probably pick up baby’s heartbeat by now. Baby’s bones are developing bone marrow, which in turn is creating blood cells. Although your diet consists of everything you can get your hands on, baby’s only consists of amniotic fluid, and the nutrition supplied by the placenta. While this sounds gross it actually serves a good purpose by getting the digestive system running smoothly before the birth.

Baby has reached around 11 ounces and is 7 inches long!

Tip

While you may be eager to fill your nursery in baby blues and pinks, along with baby elephants and everything adorable, it’s important to keep in mind that your baby will not be a baby forever. So, unless you want to redecorate in another few years try to keep the ‘baby’ theme to a minimum, or use removable wall decals and other materials that you can change out without too much effort.

Pregnancy Week By Week - Week 22

While your pregnancy stomach is getting bigger, your actual stomach is getting pushed out of the way, making big meals uncomfortable. Try breaking out your meals into five or six smaller meals you’ll be able to control your snacking much better, cut down on heartburn and feel full without feeling stuffed.

Right now your baby can feel with his fingertips, has hair, and has a rapidly developing brain. If you could watch your baby you’d see him try to taste the amniotic fluid, and then make a face if he doesn’t like it! He now weighs nearly a pound, and is 11 inches long, can you believe it?

Tip

Have a bath and see if baby’s kicks are strong enough to make the water move yet.

Pregnancy Week By Week - Week 23

So your boobs are huge, and your belly is getting out there. This is probably starting to add up to a backache by the end of the day. Help yourself out by getting support for both, with a quality maternity bra and belly support belt. Also let your doctor know if you have any pain or numbness in your legs and hips as this may be a sign of sciatica.

Baby is going to start packing on the weight over the next four weeks, and is practicing breathing with the amniotic fluid. This helps develop the muscles for actual breathing, pretty important! At about one pound and 11 ½ inches long your baby is starting to look a lot like – a baby!

Tip

Find yourself a baby list – everything you`ll need for the first few weeks. Start ticking items off as you get them. Keep your list with you, as you never know when you`ll find a great sale!
